How many times in the past week have you heard someone mention how they need to get their life together, or marvel over how together so-and-so’s life seems? Trust me, I know how it is. I look at my role models (and let’s be honest, sometimes people I don’t even know) and see their perfect grades, mile-long extracurricular list, and elaborate internships, and wonder how they still have time to look great everyday AND be genuinely nice people. Sometimes all I can do is laugh at myself and think about how much I’ve fallen short!
Well, if you’re ever feeling like I do, let me tell you something. No one, (let me repeat that), NO ONE has their life “together”! And that is okay! The reality of it is, we will never be those perfect versions of ourselves that we picture when we’re looking at our extravagant heroes. After all, they themselves are not as put-together as we think they are. Each of us has our own storms we are walking through, and the people you are looking up to are in turn looking up to people who they believe are much more “together” than themselves.
Now, don’t worry; this isn’t a post written to make you lose all hope in ever achieving your goals and dreams. It’s almost the opposite, and you’ll see why!
One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This serves as a constant reminder to us that we can find peace in any season of our lives, no matter how dark or messy it seems. Our lives will never be perfect, but we can be confident in the fact that we are serving a purpose by being exactly where we are in our journey. The thoughts and experiences you have at this exact moment are unlike any other you will have again. They are unmatched. You are providing a unique outlook and touching lives that you may never have the opportunity to again. How cool is that? You might feel like your life is falling apart, but be fearless in the truth that God is working and moving through you. Take captive each moment of every day, and live it being satisfied by where you are. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have dreams and goals, but try to simply find hope in the adventure God is leading you through. Search for joy in every circumstance and be at peace with knowing you are exactly where you’re supposed to be. Beauty isn’t just in the end-result, but in each time of your life that gets you there, and in the times of your life that follow it.
If you remember nothing else from this post, remember this. If we base ourselves off of the world’s standards, we will NEVER be enough. However, the Lord doesn’t need you to prove yourself to him with your critiqued resume, fabulous wardrobe, and glowing personality. He knows that you can’t achieve the perfection that we strive so hard to obtain. Better yet, He loves you for it, flaws and all! You are beautiful, cherished, and known exactly as you are right now! When you go through a dry season, be truly thankful, because you are making yourself deeper, stronger, and more courageous than before. You are supplying yourself with the tools to achieve what you have your eyes set on. You are giving the world a priceless prelude to the rest of this journey of finding yourself.
You are here. Soak in every moment. You might have it more together than you think you do.
“My grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9.
